Basic First Aid

Description:

This 60-minute self-paced course teaches you how to respond safely in the first few minutes of a medical emergency, before professional help arrives. It covers how to assess a scene, how to check a casualty, how to call 999, how to give CPR and use a defibrillator (AED), and how to manage the emergencies you are most likely to see at work or at home. The course uses short video demonstrations, branching scenarios and knowledge checks, and ends with a scored assessment.

Learning aim

To give you the knowledge and confidence to recognise a first aid emergency, keep yourself and others safe, and take the right first actions until help arrives.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the role of a first aider and the limits of that role.
  • Apply the primary survey (DR ABC: Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation) to a casualty scenario.
  • State the information to give a 999 call handler.
  • Sequence the steps of adult CPR, including the 30:2 ratio, a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute and a depth of 5 to 6 cm.
  • Explain how to use an AED safely.
  • Choose the correct response for choking, severe bleeding, burns, heart attack, stroke, seizures and anaphylaxis.
  • Place an unresponsive, breathing casualty in the recovery position (shown through a sequenced interaction).
  • Identify infection control steps and how to report an incident afterwards.
